Warning Tape Placement

For direct-buried fiber optic cables, a brightly colored warning tape (commonly orange, often labeled “Fiber Optic Cable”) is recommended. The tape should be buried approximately 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) above the cable to alert future excavators of the presence of the cable below . The tape should be at least 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide and durable enough to withstand soil conditions . This acts as a visual warning during trenching or digging operations.

Tracer Wire

A continuous tracer wire is often installed alongside the cable to allow future detection using standard locating equipment. The tracer wire should be insulated and accessible at handholes or splice points, enabling maintenance personnel to locate the buried cable without disturbing it . This is particularly important in areas where accidental strikes could disrupt service or pose safety hazards.

Depth Considerations

Direct-buried optical cables are typically installed at a depth of 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) below grade, depending on local regulations, soil conditions, and potential surface activity .
