Optical Module Optical Repeater

A repeater optical module regenerates, reshapes, and retransmits optical signals to extend the reach and maintain integrity of fiber-optic communication links.

Function and Purpose

A repeater optical module is used in fiber-optic systems to overcome signal loss and distortion caused by attenuation over long distances. It can perform optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversion, where the optical signal is converted to an electrical signal, processed, and retransmitted as an optical signal, or it can use all-optical regeneration for power-efficient signal boosting without conversion . These modules are essential for maintaining signal integrity, reducing jitter, and correcting dispersion in high-speed networks .

Types of Regeneration

Optical repeaters are classified by the 3R scheme:

  • 1R (Re-amplification): Amplifies the optical signal without reshaping or retiming.
  • 2R (Re-amplification + Reshaping): Amplifies and reshapes the signal to restore pulse quality.
  • 3R (Re-amplification + Reshaping + Retiming): Fully regenerates the signal, correcting amplitude, shape, and timing, commonly used in 10G and higher-speed links .

Applications

  • Industrial networks: Modules like the ProfiHub B4FOR+ link fiber optic to RS-485 or CAN-bus segments, supporting distances up to 120 km and multiple node communication .
  • Data centers and enterprise networks: High-speed repeaters, such as Amphenol's 25GBase-SR or 100GBase-SR4 modules, regenerate multimode fiber signals across multiple channels, ensuring low-latency, high-bandwidth performance .
  • Long-haul optical links: Devices like the VCL-5051 10G repeater extend 10G optical signals over spans of ~100 km per segment, supporting point-to-point applications with enhanced security features .

Technical Features

  • Fiber compatibility: Single-mode or multimode fibers (OM3/OM4/OM5) depending on the application .
  • Data rates: Modules support a range from 10G to 100G, with multi-channel support for high-density networks .
  • Power and form factor: Industrial modules often support wide voltage ranges (DC5V–DC30V) and operate in extreme temperatures (-40°C to +85°C), while data center modules are compact, hot-pluggable, and power-efficient .
  • Connectivity: Standard connectors include ST, SMA, or RJ45 for interfacing with fiber or Ethernet networks .

Advantages

  • Extends optical link distance without signal degradation.
  • Reduces errors caused by attenuation, dispersion, and jitter.
  • Supports high-speed, multi-channel, and redundant network configurations.
  • Enhances network reliability in industrial and enterprise environments. In summary, repeater optical modules are critical components for extending fiber-optic communication, ensuring high-speed data integrity, and enabling robust industrial and data center network architectures .
