General Guidelines

When laying fiber optic cables, it is essential to reserve extra length to prevent stress on the fibers and allow for future maintenance:

  • Slack Loops and Storage: For intermediate storage or splicing points, fiber is often coiled in figure-8 loops to prevent twisting and kinking. The size of these loops depends on cable stiffness, with 2–4 meters per loop being common for standard outdoor cables, while longer loops of 10–20 feet (3–6 meters) may be used for larger installations . Loops should be slightly offset to minimize mechanical pressure and flipped so the pulling end is on top.
  • Vertical Installations: Cables installed vertically must comply with maximum vertical rise limits. If the cable exceeds this limit, it should be tied off at intervals shorter than the maximum rise to prevent fiber breakage or excess attenuation . Slack should also account for thermal expansion and contraction, with typical sag allowances of 2.5 feet per 150-foot span in outdoor aerial installations.
  • Splicing and Termination: Additional cable length is required at splice points and termination boxes. This reserved length ensures that fibers can be properly handled without exceeding bend radius limits and allows for future re-splicing if needed .
  • Outdoor and Long Runs: For long-distance outdoor installations, extra length is recommended to accommodate cable tension, bends, and route deviations. Using automated pullers with tension control and lubricants compatible with the cable jacket helps prevent overstressing the fiber .

  2. Use figure-8 loops for temporary storage or intermediate pulls to prevent twisting.
  3. Reserve extra length at both ends of the cable for termination and splicing.
