Fiber optic splice trays should be carefully installed inside enclosures, with fibers neatly coiled, splices protected, and trays securely stacked to ensure proper fiber management and prevent damage.

Preparation

Before placing fibers in a splice tray, gather the necessary tools: fiber optic strippers, cleavers, fusion or mechanical splicers, heat shrink sleeves, lint-free wipes, isopropyl alcohol, and safety glasses . Ensure the workspace is well-lit and clean to prevent contamination of fiber ends .

Fiber Preparation

  1. Strip the Fiber Jacket: Remove the outer jacket and coating carefully to expose the bare fiber cores without causing microbends or breaks .
  2. Clean the Fibers: Use lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and contaminants .
  3. Cleave the Fibers: Use a precision cleaver to create a smooth, perpendicular end face, which is essential for low-loss splicing .

Splicing and Tray Placement

  1. Splice the Fibers: Align and join fibers using a fusion or mechanical splicer according to the manufacturer's instructions .
  2. Insert Splices into the Tray: Place each splice into the designated slots or compartments of the tray, ensuring that excess fiber is coiled neatly to maintain the minimum bend radius .
  3. Secure Fibers: Use nylon ties or clips at tray entry points to prevent movement and distinguish between different cable types (e.g., outgoing vs. customer cables), .
  4. Manage Ribbon Fibers: For ribbon cables, follow the manufacturer's guidance to avoid bending in the wrong direction, as some ribbons only flex in one plane .

Tray Stacking and Closure

  • Stacking Trays: If multiple trays are required, stack them according to the closure's design, fastening trays together as needed while maintaining accessibility for maintenance .
  • Tray Lid: Place the lid over the tray and press down to lock it securely, ensuring no fibers are pinched .
  • Fiber Loops: Reserve approximately 1.5 loops of fiber behind the tray for slack and future adjustments .

Testing and Verification

After installation, verify the integrity of the splices using an OTDR or power meter to ensure signal quality and detect any potential breaks or stress points . Visual Fault Locators (VFL) can help identify breaks that are too close to the splice to detect with an OTDR . By following these steps, fiber optic splice trays can be installed securely, with organized fiber management that protects splices, maintains proper bend radius, and ensures long-term network reliability .
